HOME REMEDIES USING COMMON KITCHEN HERBS

We all have herbs in our kitchen herb gardens that can be used medicinally as well as for cooking. Using the fresh herbs is preferred, but dry can often substitute for fresh. Keep in mind that dried herbs lose potency after about 2 years and when making a remedy, use twice as much fresh herbs as you would dried. This is due to the high water content in fresh herbs. Unless otherwise noted, make teas using 2 tablespoons of fresh herb (bruise slightly to release oils) to 8 oz. water, steep about 10 minutes and strain. Here are some ideas to try:

Rosemary has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Make a strong tea (1 tablespoon of fresh leaves, bruised, in 8 oz. water), steep for about 10 minutes, strain and use as a mouthwash for gum disease and mouth sores or as a gargle for a sore throat. Crush leaves & inhale to help headaches.

Parsley is a diuretic, good for kidney stones and breath freshener. Chew fresh leaves to make breath odors disappear. Drink the tea for high blood pressure and kidney stones. Parsley has Vitamin C, too!

Mints (peppermint & spearmint) are wonderful for upset stomachs, migraines and heartburn. Fresh mint leaves can be eaten after a meal to prevent digestive upset.

Ginger effectively motion sickness or nausea. It can break a fever and break up congestion. Grate about 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger to make 8 oz. of tea. Powdered ginger works well, but only use 1 to 1 ˝ teaspoons to 8 oz. of water. Do not use if taking blood thinners.

Garlic is one of nature's best antibiotics and antibacterial agents. It fights colds and flu, yeast infections and helps repel insects. It reduces cholesterol. Since the tea doesn't taste very good, peel a clove, crush slightly to release the allicins, and swallow it like a pill. Do not use if taking blood thinners.

Fennel seeds can be chewed to help bad breath, digestion, gas and heartburn. Making a weak tea from crushed fennel seeds (1 tsp to 8 oz. water - be sure and strain well) can relieve colic in babies and when drunk by the mother, it makes breast milk sweeter.

Cayenne Pepper is another wonder-herb. If you feel a heart attack coming and don't have a full-strength aspirin handy, take 1 tsp. of cayenne directly in the mouth and swallow. It will burn, but it has the same effect on the heart as aspirin. Cayenne is good for high cholesterol, blood pressure, colds and flu. It is better taken in a tincture form since teas are spicy. Do not use if taking blood thinners.
