IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

A very common ailment that affects more people than you may think is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  IBS is somewhat more common in women than men and develops at any age.  People don't like to discuss it, but it can interfere dramatically with one's life and cause a lot of pain.  The symptoms vary from person to person.  Some have constant constipation.  Some have bouts of constipation and bouts of diarrhea, while others just have the diarrhea.  Cramping and excessive gas is common.

Believe it or not, for many people, IBS is easy to control without drugs!  Simple changes in diet along with a few supplements have proven to be extremely effective in controlling IBS.  Here are some ideas:

1.  TAKE ACIDOPHILUS!  Acidophilus puts "friendly" bacteria into our intestines, enabling us to digest more efficiently.  Everyone with any type of digestive issue should be taking acidophilus.

2.  Other supplements: These include enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules, artichoke leaf extract, ginger, aloe juice, psyllium fiber, and digestive enzymes.

3.  Eliminate dairy!  Undiagnosed lactose intolerance is one of the biggest reasons people experience gastro-intestinal discomfort.  Try soy substitutions, many of which are very good!

4.    Eliminate sugar AND artificial sweeteners - yes, all of them!  Sugar consumption can have an adverse effect on our digestive systems.  Harmful bacteria thrives in a sugary environment and that can happen in your gut, too.  Artificial sweeteners are practically poisoning us!  Here is a wonderful website to explain the hazards of aspartame (Equal, Nutra-sweet - http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/fraud.htm) and sucralose (Splenda - http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_dangers.htm).

5.  Go easy on grains!  Many people with IBS who drastically reduce the amount of grains they eat have excellent results.

6.  Eat less red meat!  Red meat is hard to digest - period!  Try eating more fish and seafood with small amounts of poultry.  Your body will thank you.

7.  Reduce stress!  There are various ways to reduce stress - yoga, meditation, lifestyle changes, job changes, exercise - whatever it takes.  IBS is aggravated by stress.

8.  Eat on a regular schedule!   Eating out and changes in dietary habits often bring on an IBS attack.

9.  Cook your vegetables!  Cooked vegetables (lightly steamed) are easier to digest than raw.

10.NO SODAS!  Carbonation and caffeine wreak havoc on our digestive tracts and worsen IBS.
