 FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH

Having a naturally healthy heart is very simple. Most people find that making just a few changes to their diet and lifestyle will have long-lasting benefits. Here are a few easy tips from Natural Solutions Magazine that are guaranteed to help you reduce your risk for heart disease and premature death.

1.  Eat a Mediterranean diet. This diet is rich in whole grains, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and plant oils and very low in animal-based foods. Numerous studies exist that validate its effectiveness for maintaining cardiovascular health.

2.  Stop smoking. Smoking causes inflammation of the arteries, high blood pressure, and blood clots.

3.  Control your weight. Even a 5 or 10 percent reduction in body weight lowers your risk for cardiovascular disease.

4.  Drink in moderation. One or two alcoholic drinks a day has shown to increase longevity. Any more than that may increase your risk of certain cancers and liver disease.

5.  Reduce stress. Regular relaxation can lower blood pressure and heart rates and reduces the adrenal glands’ production of cortisol, all of which will improve heart health.

6.  Know your health risks. Getting tested for blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels will give you a base from which you can measure your progress.

7.  Get eight hours of sleep. Adequate sleep helps lower blood pressure and increases metabolism.

8.  Lift weights. Increasing lean muscle mass significantly increases your ability to burn fat.

9. Exercise. Your heart is a muscle just like your biceps or triceps. Just 30 minutes of exercise daily lowers total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure and it raises your HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. Exercise reduces stress and releases endorphins, which elevates mood. Exercise just may be the most important factor to increasing lifespan out of all health-related activities.

Don’t try to change everything all at once! I always tell people to pick just one or two things to change right away. Measure your progress and when you start to see results, even small ones, make one more change. When people try to tackle too many changes at once, they become easily overwhelmed or discouraged. All changes take time!

If you do need some herbs or supplements for cardiovascular support, there are many to choose from. Following are three of the most popular and widely-researched.

Hawthorn: Germany’s Commission E (similar to our FDA) concludes that hawthorn gently increases the strength and normalizes the rhythm of the heart beat, as well as increasing coronary and myocardial circulation, through a dilation of the coronary arteries. Use for all heart conditions as directed.

Garlic: Garlic has an international reputation for lowering blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels and generally improving the health of the cardio-vascular system. Numerous studies support these conclusions. Take the equivalent of 1 whole clove daily.  A whole clove can be peeled, smashed & swallowed in lieu of taking supplements.

CoQ10: CoQ10 is found in every cell in the body. It plays a fundamental role in the mitochondria, the parts of the cell that produce energy from glucose and fatty acids. It appears to assist the heart during times of stress on the heart muscle & is used for all heart ailments.
