THERMOGRAPHY Detects changes in breast tissue earlier than mammography My mother, her mother, and at least one of my grandmother's sisters had breast cancer, and my heritage is eastern European, so I'm considered at slightly higher risk than most women for having breast cancer. Since I found my first benign lump at age 35, I have had regular mammograms for many, many years. After I learned more about the risks associated with radiation and the changes that occur to breast tissue as a result of smashing breasts during mammography, I wanted to find a safer regular screening method. This year I had my first thermogram performed. I was so enthusiastic about it that I wanted to share this new knowledge with other women. Thermal imaging uses infrared technology to take breast images that detect the earliest signs of inflammation which is usually the first sign of any degenerative disease. Inflammation is often missed by traditional X-ray imaging. Following are a few details as published by the International Academy of Clinical Thermology: 1. The procedure is based on the principle that chemical and blood vessel activity in both pre-cancerous tissue and the area surrounding a developing breast cancer is almost always higher than in the normal breast. 2. The procedure is both comfortable and safe using no radiation or compression. 3. Breast thermography has been researched for over 30 years, and over 800 peer-reviewed breast thermography studies exist. 4. Studies show that an abnormal infrared image is the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer and when added to a woman's regular breast health checkups and self-examinations, a 61% increased survival rate has been realized. Thermography is not currently covered by insurance, but the cost is usually $150 - $200. A trained doctor reads the images and you can take the results to your physician. Breast thermography does not replace mammography and mammography does not replace breast thermography. Instead, the tests complement each other. If something unusual shows up on my thermogram, I will certainly schedule a mammogram as a follow-up. Keep in mind the following additional information: There is no one test that can detect 99-100% of all cancers. Therefore, no single test exists that can be used alone as an adequate screening or detection method for breast cancer. Thermography and mammography are “looking” for completely different pathological processes. Thermography is far more sensitive than mammography.
