ABOUT US Apothecarian Herbals is a full-service retail shop that carries herbal formulas, teas, body care products, vitamins, supplements and gift items. We also offer personal, confidential wellness consultations with our professional staff. We opened on April 26, 2003 with 1 employee and very limited hours. We now have 3 associates and are open 5 days a week. Read the Powhatan Today article about Apothecarian Herbals. MEET THE STAFF Our associates are all experienced and trained in natural health. Some are available for personal consultations (fees vary).
Debbie has been quoted in an online article for the Cure The Children Foundation. It can be accessed at http://www.cureourchildren.org/mouthsores.htm. She has also been published in Natural Awakenings Magazine. She was the featured herbalist in WTVR's television piece about alternative therapies for menopause, which aired in November, 2003, and appeared on WWBT News in October, 2004 discussing natural ways to boost immunity during cold & flu season. Debbie is a regular health columnist for Powhatan Today's Weekender, a local news publication in Powhatan. Janice
Goldstein, RN, MH
is
a Registered Nurse and Master Herbalist. Her
nursing experience includes pediatrics, newborn intensive care, maternity, and
public health. She also holds a
Master Herbalist diploma from She
offers confidential health and herbal consultations for individuals and families
and is available to speak to groups on a variety of health topics. Her
practice has recently expanded to include wellness education for owners and
guardians of companion animals. Frank Boova, H.I.S. is our newest associate who began working for us in 2005. He is a graduate of the Powhatan Leadership Institute and has worked for GNC. He has an avid interest in natural health and has completed his certification as an Herbal Information Specialist through the American Botanical Council.

Debbie
Markel, CH, CNHP,
Professional Herbalist (owner & founder), studied
Western and Oriental herbal medicine through the East West School of Herbology,
founded by prominent author, acupuncturist and herbalist Michael Tierra, where
she earned her certification as a professional herbalist. Other teachers Debbie has
studied with are Anne McIntyre, author of The Complete Women's Herbal,
Deb Soule, author of A Woman's Book of Herbs, David Hoffman, author of
various herbal textbooks and a world-famous environmentalist, Rosemary
Gladstar who wrote Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal and many others. She
teaches herbal medicine classes and educational seminars in and around Richmond
and Powhatan, VA and is a regular instructor at Powhatan High School's adult
education program. She is the author and mentor of an online class at
Virtual University called "Practical and Easy Nutrition" which runs
three times a year. Debbie received her Bachelor of Science degree from Charter
Oak State College in New Britain, CT and is currently pursuing her Master's
degree in Health Education and Promotion from the University of Alabama. She received her Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP)
designation through the
